Volunteer for the LGBT Center of St. Louis at PrideFest this weekend!

Calling all volunteers!

The LGBT Center of St. Louis needs your help this weekend at PrideFest! We will have a booth set up at booth #105 in the Unity Plaza, slightly south of the main street by the main stage. We need volunteers to staff the booth and help share the exciting new changes at the LGBT Center of St. Louis and our upcoming Grand Re-Opening on July 17th. Additionally, we’ll need your help signing people up for our email list and to volunteer.

What we’re looking for is to have at least 2 people in the booth at all times, and that volunteers work a minimum of 2 hours. We’ll direct any over-flow of volunteers to circulate the park with clip-boards to get people signed up to receive our emails. This is a great opportunity to help the LGBT Center of St. Louis grow and unite the community.

Please email volunteer@lgbtcenterstl.org to sign up for shift(s). Please spread the word to your friends and contacts. If you have any questions, please contact myself or our President, Leon Braxton.

Alderman Shane Cohn Joins Center Board

ST. LOUIS – The LGBT Center of St. Louis announced, May 27 the addition of St. Louis Alderman Shane Cohn to its Board of Directors.

Cohn was elected in 2009 and represents the city's 25th ward. He is the city's first openly gay elected official.

"I am very pleased and honored to have such a wonderful public figure on the Board of The LGBT Center of St. Louis," said Center Board President, Leon Braxton. "Alderman Cohn's addition to our board only makes our community Center stronger."

In May 2010 Cohn sponsored and won unanimous approval of a bill to add "gender identity" to the list of characteristics protected by municipal law against discrimination in housing, public accommodations, and employment.

"As we continue to journey toward equal rights, I'm happy to join the Board of this organization which is striving to provide much needed resources to the St. Louis LGBT community," said Cohn.

The LGBT Center of St. Louis was realized following the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s 2004 Creating Change Conference in St. Louis. Last month The Center was temporarily shuttered to prepare for its move to 4337 Manchester Avenue in the heart of The Grove neighborhood. The Center will reopen in June before PrideFest.

Cohn will join LGBT Center of St. Louis Board members Leon Braxton, Dara Strickland, Colin Lovett, Rick Norlin, Colin Murphy, Heidi Clark, Scott Emanuel, and Cindy Walker.

May 1, 2011 - The LGBT has MOVED!

Hello all,

As you may have heard, the LGBT Center of St. Louis closed its doors at its Euclid location and has moved to a NEW location at 4337 Manchester Rd in the Grove neighborhood.

All meetings, workshops, and programs have been temporarily postponed and/or redirected to other locations.

During the month of May we have been hard at work moving into and beautifying the new Center location.

Our grand opening of the new location is set for July 17th, 2011. Please refer to the website, blogs and Facebook for announcements regarding volunteering and our status. If you have any further questions, please email our Board President, Leon Braxton at leonabraxton@hotmail.com.

Thank you all for your patience and support as we transition into a larger space and become better equipped to serve the LGBT community of St. Louis.

Event Synopsis:
Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16. But Fred was part of an honored Navajo tradition - the nadleeh, or 'two-spirit,' who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. In relating Fred's story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America's indigenous peoples have long embraced.
