Resident Partner, The St. Louis LGBT History Project Seeks Volunteers for Oral History Training at Center

ST. LOUIS - Are you interested in the history of St. Louis and its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities?

Do you enjoy hearing elders' stories and reflections and learning from them?

Are you an attentive and thoughtful listener?

Then we need your help!

The St. Louis LGBT History Project is seeking volunteers to conduct oral history interviews. An oral history is a carefully planned interview, normally several hours long, that attempts to turn a person's memories into a rich and revealing historical document. The St. Louis LGBT History Project plans to record the oral histories of many of the people who have helped shape queer St. Louis, from the edge of living memory to the present.

If you are interested in being a volunteer oral history interviewer, please let us know. All interviewers must complete a training session that will address oral history theory and interviewing techniques and will review local and national queer history.

An oral history workshop will be held in August at the LGBT Center of St. Louis (4337 Manchester Ave.) The subsequent oral history interviews will also be held at The Center.

Please contact us The Project’s Ian Darnell at darnell.ian@gmail.com if you are interested or have any questions or comments.

Founded in 2007, The St. Louis LGBT History Project is a resident partner of The LGBT Center of St. Louis and operated by Steven Brawley (founder), Colin Murphy and Ian Darnell. The mission of The Project is to preserve the myriad stories of The Gateway City's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender past. The Project serves as the unofficial collecting arm for the St. Louis LGBT Archives  at UMSL, conducts and facilitates oral histories with area LGBT Elders, works with area LGBT organizations on maintaining their own archive, and seeks out and preserves LGBT history, documents, artifacts and memorabilia.

The Project has developed a LGBT Walking Tour in the city's Central West End, is available to speak on St. Louis’ LGBT History and provides displays from The Project collection. The goal of The Project is to not only celebrate and preserve our city’s LGBT History, but make it accessible through digital media. Resident Partner, The St. Louis LGBT History Project to Provide Displays at Center

The LGBT Center of St. Louis has joined with the St. Louis LGBT History Project. Operated by Steve Brawley (founder), Colin Murphy and Ian Darnell, The Project celebrates, documents and preserves the myriad stories of The Gateway City’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender past. Pieces from The Project will be on rotating display at the LGBT Center of St. Louis. Further, The Project will contribute to LGBTeach and our other programming.

The theme for The Project's first Center display is PRIDE and will debut at the grand re-opening on July 17th.  Featured throughout The Center will be photographs from early St. Louis PrideFest celebrations by Wilbur Wegener and Scott Lokitz; vintage Pride St. Louis posters, artwork and t-shirts and mayoral and aldermanic pride proclamations.

Founded in 2007, The St. Louis LGBT History Project serves as the unofficial collecting arm for the St. Louis LGBT Archives at UMSL, conducts and facilitates oral histories with area LGBT Elders, works with area LGBT organizations on maintaining their own archive, and seeks out and preserves LGBT history, documents, artifacts and memorabilia.
