Respond by 6/9: Paid Volunteer Opportunity

CheckUp Project
Missouri's First LGBT Health Survey

The CheckUp Project is looking for a few good people.

Are you outgoing? Do you love your community and want to be an active supporter? Are you willing to spare some of your Pridefest time to help the community and earn some cash? Then keep reading...

The CheckUp Project is the first state-sponsored effort to take a serious look at the attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs of the LGBTQ community regarding tobacco use. We believe that this project could help identify health disparities prevalent to our community that are currently being ignored by leading health agencies. Participation in this study will help facilitate what we believe is ground breaking research in this area with the potential to generate more funding to address health disparities in the LGBT Community. We deserve the same level of state support as any other population.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Hello All,

This is Lucas Hudson, editor of the Vital Voice newspaper.

The University of Missouri was awarded a grant to assess factors related to tobacco use by LGBT Missourians. Some of the things they are investigating/assessing are: initiation of smoking, daily smoking, exposure to secondhard smoke, quit attempts, and long-term cessation
rates.

I am helping them recruit ex-smokers to participate in a focus group held next week. Participants will be paid twenty dollars and fed (Novak's food) as well. There are two age groups: 25-34, and 35 plus.

The times for the focus groups are: (24-35 year olds) Monday, May 12 7:30pm to 9pm at the Vital Voice's office, and (35 and up crowd) Tuesday, 5:30pm to 7pm at the Vital Voice's office. The Vital Voice is located in the Grove, at 4337 Manchester.

You are urged to call 573-529-9704 to register, but you can just show up as well. If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail at lucashudson@thevitalvoice.com.

Thanks,

Lucas

New Hours: LGBT-friendly "The Shangri-La Diner"

Hello all,

The most LGBT-friendliest demi-vegetarian place I know, The Shangri-La Diner, has NEW HOURS!

Now for questions...

What the heck is a demi-vegetarian?
See the Vegetarian Circle's website at: http//www.yellins.com/veg/different_types.html

Will they serve other sorts of vegetarians & vegans, too?
Of course. The owner even separates the food (fish in one skillet, non-fish in another).

Wow! Where is this magical place?
2201 Cherokee St
Saint Louis, MO 63118-3226
(314) 772-8308
{corner of Cherokee & Missouri streets in Cherokee Antique Row}

What are the new hours?
Thursday -- 11 AM to 9 PM
Friday -- 11 AM to 10 PM
Saturday -- 9 AM to 10 PM
Sunday -- 9 AM to 5 PM
Sunday -- 9AM to 2PM -- ALL YOU CAN EAT BRUNCH $10.00 {INCLUDES FREE TEA OR COFFEE!} VEGAN ITEMS AT EVERY BRUNCH!

What about other days/hours?
Straight from their personnel: "If enough people start coming in on Thursdays we may expand our hours even more!"

Do they have a website?
Yep, http://www.theshangriladiner.com/ or you can also visit their Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/shangriladiner (which is being updated soon).

Hey, I'm skeptical... what accolades do they have?
They're all on the menu at http://www.theshangriladiner.com/images/TheCurrentMenu.pdf (yes... a shameless attempt to get you hungry, too).

Who are you... why are you doing this?
I'm Shän (pronounced like "Shawn"... yes, that's a boy's name, I know).
I'm doing this because 1) I am vegan, 2) another vegetarian place (who shall remain nameless) turned my lesbian/trans-self away, 3) the food is SO DARN GOOD, and 4) I love the people there... they ROCK!

Are you going to stop talking?
Yes, I am. There. I'm done. Really.

Thanks for listening...

Shän
